Storyline
In a sleepy little town in the New England area, we are introduced to Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam (Alec Baldwin) Maitland, a couple who have chosen to take a vacation, by staying at home. However, the realtor who sold them the house, named Jane (Annie McEnroe), tries to entice them to sell the house, since it seems too big for just a couple. The Maitlands rebuke her pleas, and head to town to pick up some things. On the way back to their home, they end up almost hitting a dog, which sends them into a river where they supposedly drown.

Unaware that they are dead, the Maitlands return to the house, unsure how they got back so quickly. Adam decides to go back outside to 'retrace their steps,' but instead, finds himself on a strange desert planet, inhabited by striped sandworms. When he returns to the house, Barbara says he was gone for 2 hours, and shows him a book that she found on a table, titled "Handbook for the Recently Deceased."

Time passes relatively quickly, and soon, the Maitlands house is sold (under Jane's watchful eye) to the Deetzes, a New York family composed of Charles (Jeffrey Jones), Delia (Catherine O'Hara), and their daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder). While Charles wishes for peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of New York, Delia can't stand the simple life, and hires an associate named Otho (Glenn Shadix) to make the house more 'livable' to her tastes.

Adam and Barbara try to scare them, but all their efforts are for naught, as it seems that the living can't see the dead. They take refuge in the attic, where Adam locks the door. However, Lydia manages to find a skeleton key, and trys to open the door. As Adam and Barbara foil her attempts, a tv in the attic comes to life, advertising the services of someone named Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), who claims to be able to scare the living.

Consulting the handbook, Adam manages to create a door, that takes him and Barbara to a waiting room in the afterlife, filled with others who have met rather gruesome fates. They are then shown to a special room, which reveals their home after it has been redecorated by Delia and Otho. It is here that they are introduced to their case worker named Juno (Sylvia Sidney), who chastises them for their methods on haunting, and cautions them to not take the advice of the person they saw on the television.

Returning to the house, Adam and Barbara dress up in sheets to try and scare Charles and Delia, but their attempt fails again. Annoyed with the spooky noises, Lydia finds them, and the two are amazed when they remove the bedsheets, and realize she can see them! Lydia reveals that she found their handbook, and found a passage that explains how 'live people ignore the strange and unusual,' something she considered herself to be.

The Maitlands try to enlist Lydia to help them get the Deetzes out of their house, but noone will believe her. Not sure what to do, Barbara notices something in model of the town in the attic: a glowing light around a small grave that appears to belong to Beetlejuice. She says his name 3 times, and she and Adam are whisked into the model, where they unearth Beetlejuice's body. Once they've done so, they regret this, as Beetlejuice is a rather crazy, uncouth and insane ghoul. Turned off by his personality, they resolve to try and scare the Deetzes themselves.

At a dinner party that Delia throws for some guests to show her sculptures and other art pieces, the entire group ends up singing 'The Banana Boat Song,' and find the shrimp dish in front of them turning into grasping hands. The Maitlands think they've finally succeeded, only to find that their antics have actually 'amused' the Deetzes. The Deetzes send Lydia to bring them down, and when they refuse, everyone clambers to the attic, demanding that the Maitlands show themselves. They find noone there, but Charles is entranced by the miniature of the town, and Otho finds and takes the handbook.

Leaving the attic, Charles feels that there is a lucrative business venture just waiting to happen. However, his cheerfulness turns to horror, as Beetlejuice transforms into a large snake, freaking out the family, by knocking Otho down the stairs, and dropping Charles to the floor below. Barbara manages to call the snake off by uttering Beetlejuice's name 3 times. Lydia is distraught, thinking that the snake was the Maitlands intending to do more than just scare them.

The Maitlands are then brought before Juno again, who chastises them for breaking a number of rules: having photos taken of themselves, letting Beetlejuice out, and having Otho get ahold of the handbook. Juno then encourages the Maitlands to work harder to scare the Deetzes, and Barbara and Adam contort their features into grotesque forms. However, Barbara has some apprehensions, as she likes Lydia.

Meanwhile, Lydia has grown upset, to the point of writing a suicide letter. Going to the attic to say goodbye to the Maitlands, she encounters Beetlejuice in the model. Beetlejuice tries to convince her that he can help her find the Maitlands, if she says his name 3 times. Lydia is almost tricked into saying this, until she realizes that Beetlejuice was the snake, and doubts if he really can help her find the Maitlands. Just then, Adam and Barbara appear, and Lydia explains what was about to happen. Lydia feeling distraught to be living, tells them of her wish to be dead. Barbara talks her out of these thoughts, and tells her that they've decided to not scare the family, and allow them to stay.

Just then, Otho and Charles appear in the attic as Lydia and the Maitlands hide. Otho and Charles carry Adam's model of the town downstairs, where Charles' business associate Maxie Deen (Robert Goulet) is given an overview of Charles' business idea to turn the town into a paranormal-themed attraction. Charles also requests that Lydia produce the Maitlands for their guests, but when she refuses, Otho explains that he has a way.

Using the handbook and the Maitlands' wedding clothes, he performs a seance that makes the two appear before them. However, this causes the Maitlands to deteriorate, their forms reverting to their decaying corpses.

Frantic, Lydia rushes to the model, and sees Beetlejuice in the graveyard. Begging him to help her, Beetlejuice says so on the condition that Lydia marries him. She agrees to this, and the Maitlands are saved. However, Beetlejuice then holds Lydia to her word, and holds Charles and Delia hostage as 'witnesses,' as Otho escapes.

Both Adam and Barbara struggle to stop Beetlejuice, who sends Adam into the model, and Barbara to the sandworm planet. Through a joint effort, they end up doing away with Beetlejuice, saving Lydia.

In the aftermath, the Maitlands and the Deetzes now co-occupy the house, and Lydia is much more cheerful in her new environment. by uruseiranma

Review
That quote "And it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it" will be put to good use

Once again I'm not sure exactly how to start this comment other than to praise Tim Burton, Beetlejuice is a movie that was based on his idea and is still remembered to this very day. He picked a great leading male, Michael Keaton as well as to pick a very strong cast that turned into what could have been a total flop into a cult classic that will be remembered for ages to come. Beetlejuice is a very strange movie that explores life after death, turning into a ghost and having to accept that you died, now move on. But what if there was one ghost who maybe had too much fun and just wanted to rock the living world? That's what Beetlejuice is about, the one zombie that you'd love to party with once but then ignore at the next party he's invited too.

Barbara and Adam Maitland decide to spend their vacation decorating their idyllic New England country home. Upon returning from the trip to town, however, Barbara swerves to avoid a dog wandering the roadway. The couple's vehicle crashes through a covered bridge and plunges into the river below, killing Barbara and Adam. The couple soon returns home in spirit form and quickly come to the conclusion that they are dead. A book entitled Handbook for the Recently Deceased confirms the couple's suspicion that they are, in fact, dead. Barbara and Adam's peace is soon shattered when their house is sold and the new residents arrive from New York City. Charles Deetz, aspiring sculptor and Charles' second wife Delia, and Charles' goth daughter Lydia from his first marriage, move into the home. Juno, who informs Barbara and Adam that they must remain in the house for 125 years. If they want the Deetzes out, it is up to them to scare them away. Although the Maitlands remain invisible to Charles and Delia, their daughter Lydia can see Adam and Barbara and becomes their friend. Against the advice of Juno, the Maitlands contact the miscreant Betelgeuse, a freelance "bio-exorcist", to scare away the Deetzes, but they have their hands full now with this crazy psycho.

Beetlejuice is an awesome movie, it's one of the funniest movies you'll see. I will be honest, it's a strange humor as it's a dark comedy, but it's all good. Seriously Michael Keaton is such a great comedic actor, he was the perfect choice, he brought the right amount of cockiness and comedy to the role. Also Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin had great chemistry as well as the perfect Leave it to Beaver-esquire type of couple that has a hard time accepting their world as the afterlife. Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder were perfect as the Deetzes, quite disturbing and awkward. I highly recommend this movie if you get the chance to see it, it's a great comedy classic. by Kristine, Chicago, Illinois

Tim Burton (Director)
Date of Birth:   25 August 1958, Burbank, California, USA
Birth Name:   Timothy William Burton
Height:   5' 11½" (1.82 m)

“I've always loved the idea of fairy tales, but somehow I never managed to completely connect with them. What interests me is taking those classic images and themes and trying to contemporize them a bit. I believe folk tales and fairy tales have some sort of psychological foundation that makes that possible.” Tim Burton

Mini Biography
Timothy Walter “Tim” Burton (born August 25, 1958) is a Golden Globe Award-winning American film director, producer, writer and artist. He is famed for his dark and quirky films, such as Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he co-wrote and produced. He is also famous for directing blockbusters including Batman and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Since directing his first feature film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985, he has gone on to direct and produce numerous films, many of which have received Academy Award nominations and wins. He frequently works with close friend Johnny Depp, musician Danny Elfman and partner Helena Bonham Carter. His upcoming projects include the animated film 9 and Alice in Wonderland, the Disney retelling of Lewis Carroll’s book.

Burton was born in Burbank, California, the first of two sons to Bill Burton and Jean Erickson. His year of birth is sometimes mistakenly given as 1960. Burton described his childhood self as quirky, self-absorbed and highly imaginative. As he grew older, he found home life and school somewhat difficult, often escaping the reality by watching horror and low budget films, to which he would later pay tribute in his biography of Ed Wood. Tim grew up on Evergreen Street, very near the Valhalla Cemetery in Burbank. Tim has spoken in interviews about the “weirdness” of growing up near a cemetery. He attended Providencia Elementary School in Burbank, Luther Burbank Jr. High, and later Burbank High School, which his father Bill had also attended. His father Bill worked for many years in the Recreation Department for the City of Burbank. Another film figure of importance in Burton’s childhood is Vincent Price, whose films would deeply influence the upcoming director’s career. He was inspired early on by Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion films.

After high school, he won a Disney scholarship to attend the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. He studied at the Character Animation program for three years. Burton’s first job in animation was working as a cell painter on Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings.12 Burton was then hired by the Walt Disney Studios as an animator apprentice. Burton’s job was to draw for The Fox and the Hound but he was dissatisfied with the artistic direction of the movie. He later commented on the refusal of Disney to use his design for The Fox and the Hound because his designs made the characters, in opposition to Disney’s desires, “look like roadkill”. Burton was not happy during his Disney period, but it was then that he wrote and drew the poem and illustrations that would be the basis for The Nightmare Before Christmas.

In 1982, Burton made his first short, Vincent, a 5:52 min. black and white stop motion film based around a poem written by Burton, and depicting a young boy who fantasizes that he is his (and Burton’s) screen idol Vincent Price, with Price himself providing narration. The film was produced by Burton’s girlfriend at the time, who was an executive at Disney. During production, Burton maintained an office at The Disney Studios. The two co-authored a screenplay titled “True Love”. Once the film was shown at the Chicago Film Festival and released, alongside the teen drama Tex, for two weeks in one Los Angeles cinema, Burton abruptly ended his relationship with his producer-partner-girlfriend. This was followed by Burton’s first live-action production Hansel and Gretel, a Japanese themed adaptation of Grimm’s tale for The Disney Channel, which climaxes in a kung-fu fight between Hansel and Gretel and the witch. Having aired once at 10:30pm on Halloween 1983 and promptly shelved, it is next to impossible to locate, which contributes to the rumor that this project does not exist. Next was the live-action short Frankenweenie, starring Barret Oliver, Daniel Stern and Shelley Duvall (an early supporter of Burton’s work).

Although Burton’s work had yet to see wide release, he began to attract the attention of the film industry. Producer Griffin Dunne approached Burton to direct After Hours (1985), a comedy about a bored word processor who survives a crazy night in SoHo that was passed over by Martin Scorsese. However, when financing for The Last Temptation of Christ fell through, Burton bowed out of the project out of respect for Scorsese.

Burton was married to a German-born artist for four years, whom he left for Lisa Marie, a model with whom he lived and was “engaged” to 1992 through 2001. Lisa Marie had parts in all of his films while they were a couple, most notably Ed Wood and Mars Attacks! Burton currently lives with Helena Bonham Carter, whom he met while filming Planet of the Apes – in which Lisa Marie had a small part, whereas Bonham Carter had a starring role. Burton abruptly left Lisa Marie for Bonham Carter and they now have a son, Billy Ray Burton, born October 4, 2003, and a daughter, Nell Burton, born December 15, 2007.1415 Burton and Bonham Carter live in London.

Close friend Johnny Depp is a godfather of Burton’s son. In Burton on Burton, Depp wrote the intro, stating, “What more can I say about him? He is a brother, a friend, my godson’s father. He is a unique and brave soul, someone that I would go to the ends of the earth for, and I know, full and well, he would do the same for me.”

Burton often casts certain actors more than once in his films. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Deep Roy, Michael Gough, Jeffrey Jones and Michael Keaton are amongst his most frequent of collaborators. In addition to this, to date all but two of Burton’s films have had music scored by Danny Elfman.
