Being a Bangladeshi, I might be a little bit biased towards the movie. But that is what I felt.

Nothing extraordinary,still makes a good impression on you

I am quite a regular viewer of Korean film and watched nearly 50 movies already( I am not a Korean though lol)...but this film meant something different to me.

it was my first dong-il shin film.although it was an independent film under budget constraint,the director made the best out of it quite comfortably.the acting of the two lead characters have been up to the mark.the characters were well developed but in the end the story lead to an uncertain ending. Synopsis

In Garuda di Dadaku, Bayu was a boy living with his widowed-mother and grandfather. Although talented in football, Bayu was under the strict regime of his granddad, who was deeply traumatized by the death of his footballer son in poverty. The tragedy left him an old grumpy who readily shouted a straight big No to football. Instead, granddad sent Bayu to different courses, from painting to maths, so that he could find and develop his potentials in fields other than just kicking the ball around.

Secretly, Bayu still played football – and he got a massive support from his friend Heri, confined to a wheelchair ever since he's born. Being unable to live his own football dreams, Heri put all his efforts and sources to ensure that Bayu could enter the U-13 Indonesian football team, including smoothing his way to be accepted in Arsenal's Sekolah Sepakbola Indonesia (Indonesian Football Academy). (It's a real, flesh-and-bone academy, situated in Ciputat, my homebase.) The premise is quite simple, granted, but I was entertained throughout the film by the astonishing performance of the actors and actresses, especially that of Ramzi, the comedian who played Bang Dulloh, Heri's chauffeur.

Some pointed out the weak point of this film: the reason why granddad hated football so much. His views seemed to be too outdated and peculiar, she said. I cannot fully agree; anyway, granddad was ancient and I've met people who earnestly hated things for reasons simpler than granddad's (and I won't go into details here). As much as I respect these people's views, I beg to differ.

A hint of Nationalism in A Sport Movie

The theme of this movie is very common in Hollywood pictures, a boy's dream to become a sport star, but this theme is rarely explored in Indonesian movies. This makes it very special in the history of Indonesian cinema, especially since it depicts the most popular sport in Indonesia, which is football (or in American English: soccer), while being the most popular sport, Indonesian national football team never again reach its peak in 1950-s era, when the team successfully held Russian team 0-0 in the Olympic Games. Synopsis

The film opens with a car driving late at night on a highway. In the car are Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy Conway (Robert DeNiro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). Jimmy and Tommy are asleep when Henry hears a loud thump. Trying to figure out the source of the sound, Henry suddenly realizes they need to stop and check the trunk. When they open it, we see a beaten man wrapped in several bloody tablecloths. An enraged Tommy stabs the man several times with a kitchen knife and Jimmy shoots him with a revolver. Henry slams the trunk lid shut and we hear a voiceover (Henry) say "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."

Good and deep, really interesting, maybe not a classic, but must seen!

Roland Joffe wakes up after two decades of bad cinema. Like a the phoenix bird he come again with interesting cinema.

The film is technically quite interesting. It starts with a short sequence that shows the deepest Spanish soul in a lost village near France. This sequence has an impeccable cut and setting, and works as introduction of the characters and situation. In my opinion the best sequence (speaking as cinema "freak"). The best thing in the film is the photography, which takes the viewer 1920s Spain.

Should have payed attention

Movies, like books, can't be judged by the packaging. When it came out in '05, the reviews were above average, but didn't appear to ring everybody's chimes so I avoided seeing it.

Buying the DVD seemed like a safe bet when it came out. It had lots of action and two marquee stars. But having been burned buying movies I hadn't seen - Sideways, Lost In Translation (O.K., not burned but a bit disappointed) - I passed. I'd wait till it dropped below $10. See all
